Discord Honeypot Channel: How to Catch Self-Bots and Spam Scripts

A honeypot channel is the simplest way to catch spam bots on Discord. Learn how it works, how to set one up with Krypton, and how to avoid catching real members.

A Discord honeypot channel is a channel that real members are told never to use. Spam bots and self-bots post in every channel they can see, so the first message in the honeypot identifies them. A bot like Krypton then softbans the account, which removes its recent messages from the entire server.

Why honeypots work so well

Spam scripts don't read channel names or topics; they iterate over every channel and post. Humans do read, so a clearly labelled "do not type here" channel separates them almost perfectly. Unlike keyword filters, a honeypot doesn't care what the message says, so it catches new scams the moment they appear.

Why softban instead of ban

Krypton bans the account with one hour of message deletion, then unbans it immediately. Discord deletes everything the account sent in the last hour, in every channel, so the spam disappears. Because the account is unbanned, a real person who slipped up, or whose account was hacked and later recovered, can rejoin.

How to set up a honeypot channel with Krypton

  1. Create the channel. Name it something like #do-not-type and place it where scripts can see it, near the top of the channel list.
  2. Write a clear warning in the channel topic and a pinned message: anyone who posts here is removed automatically.
  3. Set it as the trap: honeypot channel #do-not-type.
  4. Set a log channel for staff: honeypot log #honeypot-logs.
  5. Whitelist other bots that might post there: honeypot bypass add @Bot.
  6. Enable it: honeypot enable, or post the button panel with honeypot interface.

Krypton needs the Ban Members permission, and its role must sit above the roles of the accounts it acts on.

Avoiding false positives

  • Owners, administrators, webhooks, system messages and whitelisted users never trigger the trap.
  • Make the warning impossible to miss. A short, bold message works better than a long explanation.
  • Don't give the channel an inviting name like "general-2".
  • Check the log after the first week to confirm only spam accounts were caught.

Honeypot during a raid

During a raid, Krypton handles each account once per 30 seconds, so a burst of messages doesn't cause repeated actions, and the control panel updates at most every 10 seconds to stay within Discord's limits. The softban counter shows how many accounts it has caught.

Combine it with other protection

A honeypot is one layer. Pair it with AutoMod flood limits, Anti Crypto Scam for scam screenshots, and Anti-Nuke for compromised staff accounts.
